Platform Linux

Elke grote gangbare Linux distributie heeft zijn eigen systeem voor het beheer van de software. Daarmee kunt u gemakkelijk nieuwe software installeren en al geinstalleerde software bijwerken of verwijderen. Het systeem zorgt ervoor dat aan alle afhankelijkheden tussen softwarepakketten onderling wordt voldaan. Als u een nieuw pakket wilt installeren dat van andere pakketten die nog niet op uw computer staan afhankelijk is, zorgt het systeem er voor dat deze pakketten automatisch mee worden geinstalleerd. U hebt er geen omkijken naar. Nieuwe en bijgewerkte software haalt het systeem van zgn. software repositories (opslagplaatsen van software) die speciaal voor dat systeem worden bijgehouden. Vrijwel alle gangbare en ook veel minder gangbare software is daar wel te vinden. Het verdient dan ook aanbeveling het installeren en bijwerken van software zoveel mogelijk met het pakketbeheersysteem van uw distributie te doen. Hieronder vindt u onder het kopje Distributie specifieke repositories links naar repositories voor een aantal gangbare distributies.

Er zijn niettemin goede alternatieven voor de distributie-eigen pakketbeheersysteem die ik hier niet onvermeld wil laten:

• Debian en er van afgeleide distributies werken met het Advanced Packaging Tool (APT). Dit uitstekende stuk gereedschap is naar op RPM gebaseerde distributies geporteerd onder de naam APT-RPM en wordt daarom ook in één van die distributies, PCLinuxOS, gebruikt.
• Meer universeel nog is de Smart Package Manager, die met allerlei soorten repositories (APT zowel voor deb als rpm, urpmi, yum, Slackware, up2date en Red Carpet) kan samenwerken. Hoewel het programma nog in ontwikkeling is is het al prima bruikbaar.
• De voorgaande systemen zijn nog afhankelijk van distributie-eigen software repositories. Inmiddels zijn er systemen ontwikkeld die onafhankelijk van speciale repositories in principe voor elke distributie zouden moeten werken. De belangrijkste daarvan zijn Autopackage en Klik. Autopackage kent een eigen bestandsformaat, en installeert software op een Windows-achtige manier. Klikt lijkt in zijn wijze van software installatie meer op MacOS. Beide systemen staan op het ogenblik sterk in de belangstelling en maken een snelle groei door.

Mocht u met al deze hulpmiddelen toch de geschikte software nog niet hebben gevonden, neem dan eens een kijkje op één of meer van de volgende websites. Laat u niet weerhouden door pakketten die niet in het voor uw distributie geëigende formaat worden geleverd. Met het programma alien, dat vast ook wel bij uw distributie zit, is het heel gemakkelijk pakketten naar een ander gewenst formaat te converteren. Ook broncode hoeft geen probleem te zijn. Hoe u dat aanpakt kunt u lezen in paragraaf Source tarballs van Hoe Linux software te installeren en in het verslag van de workshop van september 2003 door Johan Swenker, Software installeren vanaf source. Met het programma checkinstall, dat u eveneens bij uw distributie zult vinden, maakt u er na afloop van de compilatie een voor uw systeem geschikt pakket van.

Er zijn verschillende yum software-repositories voor Fedora. De bekendste zullen hier opgesomd worden. Als je een repository wilt gebruiken moet je een bestand aanmaken in /etc/yum.repos.d, dat eindigd op .repo. Als je bijvoorbeeld Livna wilt gebruiken moet je een bestand livna.repo aanmaken met de regels die op deze wiki worden gegeven.

• software patents, prohibiting the use of abtract algorithms regardless of implementation
• corporate interest protection laws, such as DMCA in USA, and EUCD soon in Europa
• privacy restriction laws, such as strong cryptography prohibition in many countries

A lot of excellent free software falls under one of these different threats, and thus becomes illegal in various parts of the world. This actually restricts their distribution worlwide, making their use at least impractical, if not impossible, unless for experts. We don’t resign to this situation however, and we provide first-class packages for all these endangered software. Wherever you are, there is always a PLF mirror near.

This site is dedicated to the the enrichment and enhancement of the Slackware Linux operating system. We are gathering a vast resource of Slackware packages from around the world. We feel that some of the other application sites have become to hard to use and its hard to find a package just for you. Many times no links to packages are even provided.

Right now we are only offering Slackware packages but we hope to expand in the near future to all major versions of Linux.

FileWatcher is a ftp search engine which monitors more than 250 million files on more than 5,000 ftp servers. It allows you to search for files by specifying parts of the filename or other criteria. A ftp spider is constantly scanning all ftp sites which are in FileWatcher’s database. Once per day new or updated files found by the spider are included into the search index.

• Shareware21.com geeft eveneens dezelfde mogelijkheden als NewFreeware.com, maar is specifiek op shareware gericht. Bij elk programma wordt duidelijk de prijs aangegeven. De indeling van de site is gelijk aan FreewareSeek.com.
• FreewareLand is dezelfde site in een heel ander jasje. Onderscheid naar licentie wordt hier niet gemaakt. De keuze naar categorie en platform is gebleven, maar werkt op deze site absoluut niet. Misschien is het een werk in uitvoering, ook al wordt dat niet vermeld.
